The stadium underwent extensive renovation works between 2007 and 2011 which increased its seating capacity to 61,000 spectators. The renovation project was funded by Indian businessman Sourav Ganguly, who also owns the Kolkata Knight Riders cricket team. The new grandstands were named after former Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi.
